Beyond the Birth: Jes

Jes Larsen is mum to one-year-old Seren and Founder of The Jellybean Gym.

What shocked you the most about postpartum?

The debilitating feeling of isolation. I was lucky enough to have my husband home for 16 weeks post-birth, yet it still felt like the loneliest time of my life. I think part of this was because I didn’t have an instant connection with my daughter. Everyone kept telling me about the overwhelming love I would feel for her immediately, but for me, that didn’t happen. I had to get to know her and build a relationship, and I wish more people had told me how normal that was.

Top 5 postpartum essentials?

  1. Weighted wipe dispenser (We have the Ubbi one). I now buy this as a gift for every family expecting a baby.
  2. Breastfeeding support (if you choose to breastfeed). Even if it feels like it’s coming naturally to you, having someone who knows what they’re doing can help you feel on top of it all.
  3. A friend you can message at any time of day or night. They don’t have to reply right away, but knowing you have an outlet to say whatever you need, with no judgment, is invaluable. (Journaling could also serve the same purpose.)
  4. Two-way zip onesies. Buy 10 more than you think you’ll need.
  5. Food delivery or meal train. Whether it's a service or a friend dropping off meals, having food taken care of is a lifesaver.

Surprising silver lining of postpartum?

I’ll be honest—postpartum was the hardest time of my life. I dealt with severe postnatal anxiety, which led to hospitalization. I still feel as though I was “robbed” of the postpartum experience. But as I got better and my daughter got older, the biggest blessing was the friendships I formed through both my council mother’s group and From Day One Mother’s Group.

What got you through the most difficult days?

Medication and medical support. It’s okay to not be okay and to seek the help you need. And it’s important to remember that everyone’s “difficult” is relative.

What's the best thing you can do for a new mum?

Drop off food. Ideally, portioned into containers that you don’t expect to get back (because who has the brain power to return containers postpartum?). For bonus points, include simple heating or cooking instructions—take all the guesswork out of it.

Best advice you received?

“The stores don’t close once your baby is born.”

I was so stressed about making sure I had EVERYTHING I thought (or that social media told me) I would need. I spent money on things I never even used. Get the basics, then wait until you know what you actually need. Your baby might not like the things you like—let them lead the way once they’re here.

More about Jes

Jes Larsen is mum to one-year-old Seren and Founder of The Jellybean Gym With years of experience working with children and managing kids' activity classes, primarily in gymnastics, Jes was excited to take her daughter Seren to classes during my maternity leave. She couldn’t wait to see her light up with joy, make new little friends, and learn new skills. But Jes quickly realised there were no programs that truly combined educational play with an experience that was fun for both babies and parents. And just like that The Jellybean Gym was born.

Jes is on a mission to create a space where little ones can explore, grow, and thrive, while parents can enjoy the journey just as much as they do. The Jellybean Gym classes run at various locations around Melbourne, including 'Purposeful Play' at From Day One.
